Ensembles - orchestra – bands

There are many benefits to playing with others. You will learn to play your instrument more easily and quickly. You learn more and different skills, because playing together involves much more than playing well by yourself. And it's also great fun!
We offer various possibilities to play music together with other people. Can't find what you're looking for here? Let us know and we will help you fulfill your wishes.

Klezlez

Klezlez is a course on improvisation based on klezmer music – the beautiful music one hears on holiday in Greece, Turkey, Spain. You can hear the pure folk soul in the violin, flute or guitar. There is a world of difference with our Western music in the orchestras or ensembles where one can only play a specific part from sheet music, or lessons where you play written parts and mustn’t make mistakes. Would you also just want to be able to play something, of the top of your head, just like that?

In the Klezlez course, we start with a simple folk melody and expand it into beautiful improvisations. Folk music lends itself pre-eminently to discovering one's own musicality; not only playing the notes obediently, but also ornamenting, enriching and perhaps inventing the melody yourself. We use sheet music but also play pieces from memory. All slightly advanced instrumentalists are more than welcome (including percussion).

Recorder ensemble

Recorder ensemble conducted by Sonja Gruys

The recorder has been played since the Middle Ages. The oldest known recorder was found in a canal in Dordrecht and dates from the 14th century.

From the 16th -18th century, playing the recorder was very fashionable and the instrument underwent further development. Recorders were made in all kinds of sizes, which can be played together side by side. The largest recorder is more than 2.5 meters long!

A good recorder ensemble has a beautiful warm sound, comparable to the sound of a wooden organ.

In the recorder ensemble, we play music from different style periods on recorders of different sizes. The emphasis is on music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, but newer music will also be studied. We work on ensemble, articulation, ensemble sound and mood, and explore different aspects of the music. Sonja is happy to explain the selected pieces and knows a lot about the origin and historical background of the old repertoire.

The rehearsals focus on an enjoyable atmosphere as well as the technical and musical content.

Berlage Strijkers (string orchestra for adults)

The Berlage Strings: that's the name of the annual string orchestra project for violinists, violists, cellists and bass players of various levels. This orchestra of the Music Academy has become a household name in the region of The Hague and is the ideal stepping stone to the many amateur orchestras in the city. The repertoire is varied and is selected according to the possibilities of the players. Music academy teachers help with group rehearsals. If you are not currently taking instrumental lessons, a 10-lesson card for individual lessons is recommended to prepare your parts with the help of a teacher. We strive for a balanced string orchestra, which may result in a waiting list for the cellists.

Under the enthusiastic and skilled leadership of Imme Tonkes, people enjoy playing together and working towards the final concerts on 9 and/or 10 February.

Theory for guitarists

Would you like to know more about concepts such as:

  • reading notes
  • scales
  • keys
  • minor/major
  • circle of fifths
  • triads
  • modes
  • theory related to selecting songs by ear?

Then this course is for you!

Not theory for the sake of theory, but theory directly aimed at practice. You really don't have to have years of lessons to understand a bit more about the cohesion of chords and which scales you can use for your solo. With a bit of very focused theory, you can benefit enormously. For example, if you know which chords you can find in a certain key, it is much easier to find a song “by ear”.

Number of lessons:

10 lessons of 30 minutes (course can be extended).

Tuition:

Course can be followed with a 10-lesson card for 10 lessons of 30 minutes
